Lilac Moon
Published in Hardcover by Shangri-La Publications (September, 2003)
Author: Shelly Frome
Average review score:

Finally a book about women by a MAN!
I hope they make a movie about this story. LILAC MOON is the first book I know of that is totally about the way women think and act under stress that has been sensatively written by a man. Wow! I could not put it down! The characters are vibrant and engaging. I can't wait for Shelly Frome to write another mystery.

A gripping MYSTERY!
Shelly Frome delivers a spine chilling mystery about summer stock theater. I could not put it down before I found out the conclusion... a must read!

A compelling mystery novel
Shelly Frome's Lilac Moon is a compelling mystery novel set in the remote Connecticut countryside. A female reporter's investigation of an actress' near-death experience leads to a thickening conspiracy, murder, and a tangled web of lies. Lilac Moon is a highly recommended and involving saga of trickery, deception, and homicidal intent lurking in the shadows.

The Loaf and Ladle Cook Book
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (September, 1983)
Author: Joan Harlow

Timeless and Foolproof
I am one of those fortunate souls who received the book as a gift from reviewer John Stone about eight years ago. Imagine my delight when finding his words here as I contemplated buying the Loaf and Ladle Cookbook as Christmas gifts for several friends. He's right, it's wonderful - a classic of simplicity and a trusted friend. What fun to find Martha's Company Casserole, which I received from my sister in our 1960s newlywed days and thought was a treasured family recipe from her in-laws. Here it is called Bob's Casserole, but it has stood the test of time. And who but Joan Harlow could inspire me to combine apples and cabbage for an Apple Slaw that has been the hit of numerous potlucks?
I heartily recommend this book for all cooks, whether skilled or rank beginners.

Loaf and Ladle
An easy to follow book of bread, soup and casserole recipes. Many useable recipes. I have been to the restaurant several times and would go more often if it were closer to home. I was suprised to see that they don't sell the book in the restaurant.

simple and hearty
I went to prep school in the town that this restaurant "lives in" - and live, it does. I've given this book to many people - having eaten there every Saturday from age 14 to 18, and having loved the food. Whenever I get back there, I go there, and always get Joan's hearty and yummy food. These recipes are easy to execute for someone who's not the most professional of chefs, and never fail to taste good. I love any cookbook that's not afraid to call for Real-lemon - when that will do just fine..... or, one that starts a recipe out with "catch a good fish". The soups are wonderful and easy - and the breads are also great - I use a bread machine to knead the dough, raise the bread and then bake it in pans or free form....comes out wonderfully. Stews, soups and breads - what more could one want? A big test of how well I like a cookbook is how many stains it has on the pages (lots) and how many people I've shared it with/given it to (also lots).

MapEasy's Guidemap to Boston

Authors: Mapeasy Productions and MapArt
Average review score:

Easy to use and very thorough
This is the best map I've seen - unlike many other maps, it includes more than just a few of the main attractions. When I was in Boston on a trip, I suddenly needed to find a shoe store within walking distance of my hotel. To my surprise, I found one listed on my MapEasy map! The map is large so it's a little bit hard to use while you're walking around town, but for planning out your trip and finding the best places to visit, it's invaluable. Don't leave home without it!

I Use These Maps Everywhere
I have a MapEasy Map for each city I have ever visited. They are fun to look at, easy to follow and make excellent recommendations. This is a great map

Helpful and Fun!
Being new to solo business travel, it was either stay in a hotel room or get out and play! MapEasy maps are a walking tourist's dream. I can spot-check my location instantly vs. just by street. There are places listed on the map, simply because of their building by building reference, that standard guidebooks would never mention. Boston was my first map - I now get one for each city that I visit.

Marine Life of the North Atlantic : Canada to New England 2n Ed.
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (May, 1999)
Author: Andrew J. Martinez
Average review score:

Useful field guide to marine life of the region
I bought this book during a trip to the Gulf of Maine, and found it to be an extremely useful guide to the invertebrates, vertebrates, and algae of the NE coast of North America.

Photos in the field guide are composed well and show detail needed to figure out what you are looking at. Each photo in the book is accompanied by a brief summary of identifying characteristics of the organism itself, a description of habitats where they are likely to be seen, the geographic range for the organism, and brief comments that will help you look in the right kinds of places to see things.

Though not a comprehensive guide to marine life of the region, this book provides a great introduction to marine biota. The author even provides room in the book for you to write down where and when you saw each entry. There is also room for brief comments.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you are planning a trip to New England or the Maritime Provinces.

Good stuff!

An excellent photo identification guide.
This book has many outstanding pictures. This book is a great picture identification guide with a lot of clear descriptions of subjects and their habitat. It has a place beside each picture to keep track of when and where you saw each subject making you want to find more and more of the featured subjects. It covers from seaweeds to sharks and everything in between. It shows all the ocean life you are likely to find as a diver, snorkeler or beach comber.

Better than Cod Cakes and Beans
Hey! I like 'em. I've used these books for most of my trips for many years and they really are unmatchable time savers. ... With these books there is enough detail to find the feature you are looking for, yet not overly detailed as to require a lot of page flipping. ...To use as a fine detail map for driving they give terrific information about which streets to take. We used ours to try to negotiate the traffic at rush hour in Salem, Mass. ... The book was able to show us alternatives to avoid the worst of it. I also like the DelOrme software on my computer. ...

Some errors but lots of good info
Some back roads in western MA are incorrectly named. An otherwise excellent resource.

loaded with topographic maps
The 80-page book is loaded with topographic maps showing in detail important information, like trails, rivers, forests, hills, and more. The Gazetteer is loaded with important information such as state and recreational areas, hiking and biking trails, paddling opportunities, golf courses, wildlife viewing areas, downhill and cross-country skiing areas, private campgrounds throughout the state, museums and attractions, and city maps of Boston, Springfield, and Worcester. For example, under wildlife viewing is liested Barre Falls Dam Project. Barre is famous for song/perching birds, upland birds, hoofed mammals, barrier free access, parking, picnic areas, restrooms, hiking, non-motorized boating, cross-country skiing, hiking. Folks! I have been here and what is listed is 100 percent true.

Monty's Pal, A must have book for any animal lover.
What a great find, a book written about the life of an animal and all the people and things that have touched him,and make him the great horse that he was. Howard Small must be a great man I would love to meet a man that has done so much in his life .His family has a lot to live up to.The stories he must be able to tell. I work in a store that sells Monty's Pal and it is a great gift for people to get for loved ones .And they usally .come back for a second copy because they couldn't give the first one away. I'm looking forward to reading it to my five year old daughter as her first chapter book and she hopefully will love it as much as I

I purchased several years ago I recommendI
I am not a big reader but this true story is almost beyond belief. I even contacted the author. He told me that from the time he bought Pal it was. It may start out like a book for the young reader but it gets anyones attention and keeps it.

An exciting heart warming true storyI
If this doesn,t fit into the word classic i wouldn, tknow what does. I couldn,t put it down when I got into it. I have researched and find that the author is famous in all phases of horses. great redingfor all ages. Set in the days before TV when Western movie stars were the idols of the day Montyand Pal were engaged by show that had previously used Tex Ritter and Ken Maynard as teir headliners.

Mountain Bike America Boston
Published in Paperback by Beachway Pr (01 March, 2000)
Author: Jeff Cutler
Average review score:

Mountain Bike America Boston
I must admit this is one of the better written "mountain bike guide" books for the Boston area. It's obvious the author did more than just hang at the trailhead to interview local riders.....he got on his bike and observed firsthand the joys and challenges of the trails he reviewed. Cutler's descriptions are awesome......he's a mountain biker's friend.

The Topo information is excellent, and in my humble opinion, a necessity for any mtb guide (why don't others do this basic research?).......If riding in Boston is in your plans or you're a local looking for new trails, this book is your starting point.....

Happy trails for you
I'm not the enthusiast for biking that author Jeff Cutler so obviously is, but I sure do like this great little guide to two-wheeling in the Boston area. I was amazed at the number of historic/relaxing/scenic/just-plain-fun trails within a few miles of where I live just west of Boston. And I enjoyed the author's readable style and enthusiastic descriptions of what you'll see - and what you'll encounter - along the way. In fact, the "trail detail" that Mr. Cutler provides is definitely reassuring. And the 15-page section up front is a remarkably helpful introduction to the joys - and pitfalls - of off-road biking. Whether you're a novice or an expert, you'll find at least one ride in here that seems designed just for you. I highly recommend this book as a great read that will show you the trail to a great ride.

The Best Boston Mountain Biking Guide
Great for novice to expert riders looking for new places to ride in eastern Massachusetts. With fantastic maps, great directions and concise ride descriptions. Try the Boston ride!!

Nantucket: Seasons on the Island
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (April, 1995)
Authors: Cary Hazelgrove, Cary Hazlegrove, and David Halberstam
Average review score:

Images that are simple and beautiful.
Cary captures parts of the island that you'll never see if you only _visit_ Nantucket. Having spent the first 18 years of my life on Nantucket (NHS '94) I can truly identify with her photos. Her photos of little known corners and landscapes bring me back to the island.

Cary is in touch with the island
Cary Hazelgrove is the only photographer on island who has a sense of the real island! She doesn't just take "pretty" pictures like any other photo book of the Island. I can feel these images!....I hope she continues with her excellent work.

Cary's book takes me back to Nantucket.
If you love Nantucket, you've got to have this book. Cary, in my opinion, is the best photographer on the island. Her photos are so beautiful that I'm transported back to Nantucket as I look through the pages of this book. Somehow she captures the full feeling of being on Nantucket and for that I'm grateful. It's a magical place and Cary's photos bring back wonderful memories every time I look at them.

Natural Landscaping: Designing with Native Plant Communities
Published in Paperback by Univ of Wisconsin Pr (2003)
Authors: John Diekelmann, Robert M. Schuster, and Renee Graef
Average review score:

Essential resource
Natural Landscaping is an essential resource for anyone interested in landscaping with native plants. The importance of learning to use native plants is so important as we face continuing droughts in various parts of the country, including here in Williamsburg, VA. The book is so full of information that I find myself going back to it often. Many thanks to the authors for this fine volume.

Cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Natural Landscaping: Designing With Native Plant Communities by licensed architect and landscaping authority John Diekelmann and natural plan restoration expert Robert Schuster is a fascinating, "user friendly" instructional guide on basic landscaping principles, as well as cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands and introduce native plant species for wetlands, grasslands, forests, and more. Black-and-white photographs as well as an inset section of color plates wonderfully illustrate this meticulous, fact-filled, professional quality, highly recommended "how-to" guide for anyone aspiring to enhance or restore native plant communities.

This is a wonderful resource
I have the 1982 edition of this book - I stumbled across it and have been amazed ever since that such a book was written in 1982 before this approach to gardening/landscaping was popular.
It is tailored to the midwest, but the technical solidity and sound design concepts should apply anywhere.

New England Cooking: Seasons & Celebrations
Published in Paperback by Berkshire House Pub (October, 2001)
Author: Claire Hopley
Average review score:

A wonderful compilation of outstanding dishes
New England Cooking: Seasons & Celebrations is a wonderful compilation of outstanding dishes that draw from a distinctive regional culinary tradition. The very chapters headings conjure up images of gustatory delight: First Harvests; The Wanderers' Return; Spring Holidays; Beside the Sea; Berry Season; Shakes & Gardeners; Heritage Days; Harvest Festivals; Wine, Beer & Cider in New England; Thanksgiving; Party Time; Cold Weather Fun; and Once A Year. From Smoked Scallop Crostini with Radish Butter; Peppered Tuna with Sweet Potato Puree; Nantucket Portuguese Bread; and Pumpkin Chiffon Pie with a Gingernut Crust; to Muireann Glenmullen's Cranberry-Nut Soda Bread; Apple-Raisin Hand Pies; Cider-Baked Winter Vegetables; and Indian Pudding, New England Cooking offers superb recipes that will please any palate and satisfy any appetite.

A great book!
I received this book as a gift and have thoroughly enjoyed reading it. What distinguishes it from many cookbooks I've seen is that it includes detailed commentary on the origins of and traditions relating to various dishes and ingredients. This level of information creates a context for the recipes that most cookbooks fail to provide. It also makes the book a good read for someone who is too busy to cook or who is more interested in learning about New England cooking than actually trying recipes.

The book contains a wide variety of recipes. The author has included recipes for several standard favorites and has also come up with many creative "twists" on otherwise familiar dishes. I appreciate this mix. I've already tried several enjoyable recipes and plan to try others in the near future.

Exceptional
Claire Hopley has created a well-orchestrated, easy-to-use book on New England cuisine that is a must-have for both the casual and expert chef interested in the foods of the region. The book's plethora of recipes include many, many colorful pictures and, most impressively, interesting stories and histories of many of the tasty meals. Miss Hopley is an excellent writer, blessed with a keen ability to instruct through words without oppressing the reader with minutia. As a New Englander and a huge fan of her food publications in the local newspapers (e.g Boston Globe), I highly recommend her work and especially this book.
